Real life lessons

Image
Always trying to put the real world in perspective to our kids . In this lesson students were given 1 million dollars to buy homes. They had to use rounding and estimating to find their totals. This activity involved rounding , estimating adding and subtraction. Man the kids loved it. We did it a second time  with 300,000 to buy cars.

Not sorry kids live here..

Image
This post is off my normal teacher post.  I am done worrying that my house looks like kids live here. I am done panicking and throwing  things in cubbards for your playdate or cookout. Yes my kids play with toys and they do so all over my home. I am not dirty and cluttered, I am a mom. I am a GOOD mom, one that let's her kids have a childhood. Trying to make it as technology free as I can. Let's stop worrying that our kids play with toys or even have the freedom to live in our home.. I am starting now and am no longer sorry..

Smekens who are these amazing people!

Two years ago I attended a Smekens training and it has opened my eyes to a new way to address literacy. Using some of the things you know and use and making them more relevant to the students. Their website had some amazing resources. I have attached their main website and another link to their Teacher Pay Teacher resource page. Trust me you want to check them out:):):) Professional development in reading & writing for K-12 teachers Main Site Teachers and their students benefit from the practical, best-practice teaching strategies developed and shared by Kristina Smekens and her team of expert literacy consultants. Get to Know You Idea!

Image
I came up with this Great back to school get to know you idea the other day. This year I am now teaching 4th grade and have come up with a super great idea for kids to learn others names and meet new people. Before the year starts I am going to collect 26 mini water bottles. You can find these at Kroger or Walmart . Kroger brand is 2.99 for 24 bottles or the brand below is usually 3 for 10. I have stopped at the craft stores and collected, letter beads, sprinkles , glitter and other little trinkets that will fit inside the bottle. Before the kids come I am going to place each students first name inside the bottle. with glitter and other fun things. Then I am going to seal them and place a number on the bottom. I will place a name bottle on each students desk and provide a list of student names on the overhead or board for students to reference. Each student will have to try to figure out which classmates bottle they have. This may be harder for the younger grades but the older grades

Fluency Defining Reading Fluency For the most part reading fluency can be defined as the ability to read text easily, quickly and expressively without making much effort and with little difficulty comprehending the meaning of the text. When evaluating a child's overall reading fluency, there are two different types of fluency that are being looked at: oral reading fluency and silent reading fluency. Oral Reading Fluency Much as it sounds, oral reading fluency refers to how fluently a child can read out loud. This type of fluency is less about how well a child understands and remembers what he is reading and much more about how he decodes the text. If your child is a fluent oral reader, he should be a

Sight words Are they that important ye or no? I think this is the one thing that lower grades need to master and have solid before moving to second grade. If you wonder how important these words are just take any book you own and start highlighting all the sight words you see on one page. You will be amazed to see how much ends up being highlighted.  Below I am going to list different fun activities you can do with your sight words and places to find resources. If you have any other ideas please leave a comment. What are sight words? Edward W. Dolch developed lists of the 220 most frequently used words in children's books. Form 50 to 75% of the text consisted of the words he put on his lists which became known as the Dolch words' lists. A reader who knows the Dolch words will recognize the majority of the words in a typical selection. Dolch also developed a list of 95 commonly used nouns. Dolch sight words should be recognized on sight (instantly) for reading to pro

Morning Meetings

About two years ago I joined a school that did this thing called, morning meetings. Now you may say come on that's what you should always be doing. In the last 14 years I would just jump right in and start working. Well morning meetings have changed the whole feeling of my classroom. Each day we start with a positive message or quote that we focuse on for that day. We then just do a few minutes of small talk or stories about things going on in our lives. This is my students favorite part. I tell them stories about my two boys and they just cant wait for those stories. Morning Meeting is a powerful way to start the day. It meets students’ needs for belonging, significance, and fun; provides students with an opportunity to practice social and emotional skills; and prepares students for the days’ learning. Clip Chart

Why do we use the clip charts? Do they help or do they really cause anxiety and worse behaviors. This is my first year I decided to trash that clip chart and man it was amazing. I wanted to share my thoughts and experiences with that color coded clip chart. We all had that one kid that no matter how many times they went up or down they just didn't care and neither did the parent. Then we have all had that kid that went to red and to the office they go only to come back with a piece of gum and sticker. WHAT! UGG the life of a teacher. Have we ever thought that the clip chart is the cause of stress and anxiety on you and some of the kids? My son started kindergarten this year and man that clip chart was a disaster. I mean straight disaster hurricane meets Add to dictionary. He would FLIP OUT if he has to move his name and the anxiety he had was off the charts. We realized that he needed a separate behavior plan separate than the clip chart. It made me think how many other kids have m

PIcture Books

Image
Why Use Picture Books? Picture books are important because of how readers interact with them, especially the read-aloud experience. No matter how many awards it may have won or how beautiful the prose or illustrations, an unread picture book collecting dust on a shelf is just paper and cardboard. The magic begins when a child or grown-up reader opens up the book. My Favorite Author Eve Bunting Writer Anne Evelyn Bunting, also known as Eve Bunting, is a Northern Ireland-born American writer of more than 250 books. Her work covers a broad array of subjects and includes fiction and non-fiction books. Her novels are primarily aimed at children and young adults, but she has also written the text for picture books. While many of her books are set in Northern Ireland, where she grew up, her topics and settings range from Thanksgiving to riots in Los Angeles. Bunting's first book, The Two Giants, was published in 1971. Due to the popularity of her books with children, she has

Zones of Regulation

Image
Self-regulation is something everyone continually works on, whether we are cognizant of it or not.  We all encounter trying circumstances that test our limits from time to time.  If we are able to recognize when we are becoming less regulated, we are able to do something about it to feel better and get ourselves to a better place.  This comes naturally for some, but for others it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced. This is the goal of The Zones of Regulation (or Zones for short). Check it out: http://zonesofregulation.com/index.html This idea was my favorite using paint strips for the zones.
